F.A.Q.

Cylinders

  • When exactly does my visual inspection ("VIP") or hydrostatic test ("hydro") expire?

    • By US law, through the Department of Transportation (DOT), required hydrostatic test expires five years (60 months) following the test and the annual VIP's expire one year (12 months) following the inspection. Because neither a visual inspection sticker nor hydro retest mark typically show the day of the month performed, a long established and widespread practice in the SCUBA industry has been the valid period expires on the first day of the month shown.
    • Recently, the DOT has issued a clarification statement that the hydrostatic test officially expires on the last day of the month shown. However, we recommend re-qualifying your cylinder before the first day of the expiring month.
  • Will Meridiano 87 fill my older 6351 aluminum alloy cylinders?

    • No, Meridiano 87 will not fill any cylinder manufactured before 1990 or made from aluminum alloy 6351. these cylinders are considered higher risk. According to the DOT, alloy 6351 is considered susceptible to a phenomenon known as Stress Load Cracking. the Cylinder will generally present minute cracks in the crown. Due to these failures, the cylinder may leak or have a catastrophic failure. (Explosion).
  • How to I recognize Al 6351 cylinder?

    • Cliff Impact a division of Parker Hannifin manufactured cylinders with AL 6351 until July 1990.
    • Justice Cylinders manufactured all there cylinders with AL 6351.
    • Luxfer USA also known as Luxfer - Gas Cylinders, manufactured cylinders ciDOT 3AL y CTC 3ALM with AL 6351 before July 1988. Any Luxfer USA cylinder with a hydrostatic test before May of 1988 are made from AL 6351.
    • Walter Kidde AL 6351 cylinders were not manufactured after 1990. Any WK cylinder marked with a hydrostatic pressure test before december 1990 was manufactured from AL 6351.
    • Catalina Cylinders and Cliff Division by Catalina were never manufactured with AL 6351.
    • Fibre reinforced aluminum cylinders manufactured with AL 6351 must have served their 15 year lifespan. they are no longer eligible for requalification.
  • What cylinders require a internal inspection before filling?

    • Our operators are trained to make simple evaluations of all cylinders before they are filled. Meridiano 87 requires an internal inspection when tanks present the following characteristics:
      • Leaks
      • Unusual noises, (water, loose pieces, etc.)
      • Abnormal weight
      • Zero pressure.
      • Air or nitrox with scent.
  • What cylinders will Meridiano 87 refuse to fill?

    • Meridiano 87 will refuse to fill cylinders presenting the following characteristics, even though they may have a valid hydrostatic pressure test or visual inspection sticker.
      • Cylinders manufactured with AL 6351 or older than 1990.
      • Tapered neck threads, these are very old and wear can cause the threads to no longer hold
      • Heavy corrosion, especially line corrosion at the boot.
      • Exterior damage, such as a dent, gouge, bulge, or deep pit.
      • Evidence of exposure to high temperatures, such as scorching.
      • Vinyl or other unusual or unrecognized coatings or paints.
      • Valve using a lead plug overpressure burst disk.
      • Attributes that would cause it to be permanently removed from service per DOT or PSI standards.
  • What do I need for Meridiano 87 to fill my scuba tank?

    • A cylinder in good conditions with a valid hydrostatic pressure test and visual inspection test clearly labeled on the tank.We will only accept tests from a valid laboratory, cylinder manufacturer or Meridiano 87
    • Present documentation to valid the above.
    • If the above cannot be proven, Meridiano 87 will gladly perform any test for a nominal fee.
  • What is Meridiano 87’s fill policy?

    • Please click hereto read Meridiano 87’s Fill Policy.

Filling procedure

  • Will Meridiano 87 fill my cylinder above the manufacturer's recommended maximum pressure?

    • No, under no circumstances will Meridiano 87 overfill a cylinder
  • At what pressures can Meridiano fill cylinders?

    • Meridiano 87 will generally fill scuba tanks to the manufacturer recomended 3000 PSI. However, our equipment can fill up 4500 PSI on high pressure rated cylinders.
    • The client can request a lower pressure, if he so desires.

Products and Quality

  • What air qualities and Mixes can Meridiano 87 fill Scuba tanks with?

    • Meridiano 87 has the following standard gases to fill scuba tanks
      • Filtered Air or E-Grade Air
      • Double Filtered air. Also known as Oxygen Compatible Air, o Normoxic Nitrox. Used for Nitrox Mixtures.
      • NITROX 32 (Enriched Air with a total of 32% oxygen)
      • NITROX 36 (Enriched Air with a total of 36% oxygen)
      • NITROX 40 (Enriched Air with a total of 40% oxygen)
      • NITROX 50 (Enriched Air with a total of 50% oxygen)
      • NITROX 80 (Enriched Air with a total of 80% oxygen)
      • NORMOXIC TRIMIX (21% Oxygen, 35% Helium, 44% Nitrogen)
      • HELITROX (26% Oxygen, 17% Helium, 57% Nitrogen)
      • TRIMIX 18/45 (18% Oxygen, 45% Helium,374% Nitrogen)
      • TRIMIX 15/55 (15% Oxygen, 55% Helium, 30% Nitrogen)
    • Meridiano 87 can manufacture all other Nitrox mixtures up to 80% with a special order.
    • TRIMIX , HELIOX and Argon are also available by special order.
  • How does Meridiano make nitrox?

    • Meridiano 87 makes nitrox using the partial pressure principle. We can provide a much more precise mixture than with other systems and a greater range of mixtures. What these means is we mix a known volume of oxygen compatible air with medical grade oxygen to manufacture Nitrox. Each cylinder is rolled for 10 minutes to ensure a homogenous mixture and then electronically analyzed for oxygen content. Each cylinder is then clearly labeled with its unique oxygen content for added safety.
  • What quality air and nitrox does Meridiano 87 manufacture)

    • Our products are externally analyzed every three months by Lawrence Factor in the United States, making sure our air at least meets and exceeds E Grade Air. Our double filtered air is certified as Oxygen Compatible and medical grade.
    • Please Click here to see our latest analyses.
    • Internally Meridiano 87 daily analyses air humidity and carbon dioxide content. Carbon monoxide is checked continuously via in line monitoring systems, with additional samples taken every fifteen minutes by our operators.
  • What other gases does Meridiano 87 specialize in?

    • Meridiano 87 has on premises a 1500 gallon medical grade liquid oxygen tank for the manufacture Nitrox and the filling of oxygen for industrial and medical purposes.
    • We also have the following gases available.
